This exhibition brings together a selection of works developed during the course Painting: Light and Painting by Anika Ahmed. At its core lies a shared investigation into how light shapes what we see — and how it can be translated into paint.

Participants learned to paint by closely observing light in its many forms: the flat glow of an overcast day, the sharp contrast of afternoon sun, the warmth of a lamp, or the artificial intensity of night-time interiors. Special attention was given to colour, luminosity, reflection and transparency, and to how different materials and surfaces respond to light.

The course moved from drawing and black-and-white painting towards coloured works in acrylic and oil. While early assignments were based on shared subjects, participants gradually developed their own directions, following personal fascinations. The course functions as a collective atelier, where individual practices evolve in dialogue with others.

Alongside working from observation, participants painted in response to historical and contemporary artists who approached light in distinct ways, including Lois Dodd and Utagawa Hiroshige. Many works in this exhibition are the result of this interplay between looking, studying painters, and developing a personal relationship to light and colour.

Together, these works reflect a diverse yet connected exploration of painting as an act of attention — to light, to colour, and to the world as it appears and changes before our eyes.

Enjoy!
