[EN] Solstice Theatre presents: HARVEY, by Mary Chase. A play about kindness and a six-and-a-half foot, invisible, white rabbit.
Play summary:
One of the longest running comedies in Broadway and West End history, Harvey has endeared generations of audiences with the relationship of the amiable Elwood P. Dowd and his best friend, the 6’1” invisible white rabbit which only he can see.
Elwood’s sister, Veta, is also a kind and sociable woman. All she wants is for her daughter, Myrtle Mae, to have a chance at a decent place in society one day and for her brother, Elwood P. Dowd, to be happy, respectable, and sane. This proves difficult, given that Elwood has an invisible white rabbit for a best friend. When Elwood brings Harvey home and “introduces” him to Myrtle and Veta’s high-society party guests, Veta decides that enough is enough and that she must commit her brother to a sanitarium. When she admits a dark secret of her own to the sanitarium's doctor, however, she sets off a comedy of errors, and sends the sanatorium staff on a wild goose chase to lock both Veta and Elwood away, as “Harvey” forces everyone involved to question reality and their own sanity. The behavior of the sanitarium’s psychologist and his staff raise the age-old question of who is more dangerous to society: the easy-going dreamer with a vivid imagination or the people who want him to conform to the accepted version of reality.
In the end Veta has an important choice to make; will she have her brother conform to become a normal, respectable member of society (and you know what bastards they are!), or accept him as he is?
