Layla May Arthur
About Layla
Layla first discovered paper art when she saw an exhibition of paper art just before she moved to the Netherlands to study Fine Art at Minerva Art academy. She fell in love with the way that the paper itself was transformed into an artwork, without having any other materials added to it. She also loves how the negative space can be used to play with light and shadows to create installations which interact with an audience.
Teaching at VRIJDAG
Layla likes to think of herself as patient and clear when giving instructions. Paper cutting and other paper techniques often involve thinking about how you work with the material in a slightly different way, so it’s important to explain this clearly. She also enjoys being surprised by the creative ideas that people come up with. While she has her own techniques and methods, she loves seeing how other people come up with different methods!
Favorites /inspiration
Layla really loves the music of Hans Zimmer and often listens to it in the background while working.
Proud of!
Layla is proud of the calm and focus her lessons create. She loves seeing how engaged people become while paper crafting. Everyone becomes so focused and concentrated on working with the paper that the room falls quiet and peaceful. People are then happy to spend hours crafting away and they almost always want to have even more time to make their piece!
