Jazz is a broad concept. Take the North Sea Jazz Festival as an example: alongside established jazz artists, you increasingly see musicians from the pop scene who draw inspiration from jazz, rhythm and blues, and soul. Do you love jazz music and play an instrument? Then sign up for one of the jazz combos. You don’t need to be an advanced player or be able to read sheet music yet—everyone is welcome to join!

In a VRIJDAG jazz combo, various jazz and related styles are explored, such as blues and Latin. The repertoire is adapted to the level and character of the group at that moment. There is a strong focus on musical elements such as dynamics, tempo, timing, and harmony, but you will also learn how to listen to each other and communicate through music.

Jazz Combo Placement

All instruments are welcome, but for practical reasons the number of participants for some instruments is limited (for example, drums). At the moment, there are no spots available for wind instruments, but there are spots for drummers. Interested? Please sign up via cursus@bijvrijdag.nl and mention the instrument you play.

Available Spots

• Monday afternoon 17:15–18:45 with Diederik Idema – spot for drummer
• Monday evening 19:45–21:15 with Tonke Suithoff – spots for wind instrument (no saxophone), guitarist, violinist, and drummer
• Wednesday evening 18:30–20:00 with Diederik Idema – spot for drummer

The final combo placement is determined based on level and instrument combination. In consultation, you will be placed in one of the following combos:

• Monday evening from 17:15 onwards
• Wednesday evening from 18:30 onwards
