About Jonathan
Jonathan Clark is a passionate ceramicist who has been fascinated with clay processes since his teenage years. His love for ceramics started when he began working in a small ceramics factory as a teenager. Since then, he has continuously returned to the craft, mastering both slip casting and wheel throwing.
At 17, Jonathan traveled solo to Morocco, followed by trips to Mexico and Guatemala at 18, and later to India and North Africa. These journeys broadened his perspective and deeply influenced his work as an artist.
Teaching at VRIJDAG
In his classes, Jonathan focuses on helping students develop their skills and boost their confidence. For him, it’s not just about techniques, but the entire creative process and the transfer of knowledge.
Favorites/Inspirations
Jonathan finds inspiration from a mix of famous and lesser-known artists and craftsmen. He draws much of his inspiration from ceramicists like Shozo Michikawa and Lee Kang-hyo, as well as from the traditions of the Shoji Hamada school and contemporary potters such as Lisa Hammond and Grayson Perry. He often feels personally connected to the work of those he has met. Iconic figures like Picasso and Rodin continue to have an influence on his artistic vision.
Raising self-esteem and the transference of skills is at the heart of my teaching.
