In this one-day workshop, participants dive into the surprising world of everyday supermarket items as inspiration for ceramic art.

Drawing on the spirit of Dadaism and the objet d’art tradition, we explore how humour, simplicity, and the “banal” can lead to playful and striking ceramic sculptures. Think of the legacy of Marcel Duchamp, Baroness Elsa, Magritte, and Beatrice Wood—translated into your own take on tubes, tins, and plastic packaging. 

Throughout the day, participants are introduced to the basics of slip casting and simple mould-making techniques. You will work with prepared plaster moulds, and you will also create your own one- or two-part mould based on a small supermarket product suitable for the process. In addition, you will learn how to clean and refine cast forms, decorate them with coloured engobes, and add graphic elements through mono-printing and other ceramic printing techniques. 

By the end of the workshop, you will go home with your own handmade plaster mould (including a small amount of slip to use once the mould has dried) and a cast, decorated piece that will be fired and finished with a transparent glaze after the workshop.

Everyone is welcome to drop in. Expect a day full of experimentation, unpretentious ideas, humour, and plenty of ceramic fun.
